[MANNAM heal the world] Conformity in Volunteering!

 [MANNAM heal the world] Conformity in Volunteering!

 Some people are waiting in front of the crosswalk for the traffic light. But suddenly one of the people looks around to see if there is a car coming, and as soon as he knows that there is no danger coming up, he crosses the street. Like this, two more crosses the road as the same way like the first. In this situation, what would you do? If you were in the same situation would you cross the street even though it is a red light? Well, some psychologists found that people have psychology to follow the others behavior. This is called conformity theory. What I wrote up is a bad example about people’s behavior. But what if this theory comes into a good situation?

A person’s thinking is very simple. If the others do it, they think “Why not me?” This is why people follow what others do. This is another example. If one man stares at an object far away, a stranger who passes by doesn’t care what he is doing. But if there are more than three people who are doing this, a stranger who watches this can’t just pass without stopping. The stranger does the same act with others.

Now let us think about this. There are things that we can do to save and make peace to the world. Because we do not have money like Warren Buffett, we can’t donate money like him. Then what can we do? We can volunteer with our hands and with our hearts. Although it doesn’t appear that much, but all the small efforts this does can make a big movement to the world. The Association which is doing a good job is MANNAM! Why don’t we volunteer or donate and make this into a big movement though MANNAM? If one starts, and more than three people does this, we can make and motivate others to follow this great movement in MANNAM. Remember that your action and behavior can influence others. Be careful! It can make other fall into a bad situation or in to a better way. Let us share and love others though MANNNAM Volunteer Association!

[MANNAM Int'L] PEACE LEADER: Aung San Suu Kyi Daw and 'you'

[MANNAM] PEACE LEADER: Aung San Suu Kyi Daw and 'you'

There are people who are known for their efforts to make the world better place.
Aung San Suu Kyi Daw is also one of globally known peace leader.
Then why would she known for peace leader?

There could be several reasons, but one thing would be dedication to freedom and peace. She didn’t give up her will for freedom of Myanmar in many difficult situations. She was under the house arrest for 14 years. She had many chances to live quiet and peaceful. Even before the armed soldiers, she didn’t give up the dream for freedom in Burma. Now Aung San Suu Kyi Daw’s dream of freedom is no longer a dream.

Also on May 2008, when Cyclone Nargis hit Burman, in this difficult circumstance and poor environment, she didn't go outside of house. At that time, Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest. If she had went outside of house, that meant she would be kicked out or it would be giving excuse to her opponent as she wanted to leave. Leaving Burma could guaranteed comfortable life to her, but she didn't choose her own comforts. Aung San Suu Kyi stayed in the broken house to show her willingness to stay in Burma.

Also when her beloved husband was dying for cancer, she chose to stay in Burma for people who  She dedicated her life for the freedom of peaceful Myanmar.

And , based on Aung San Suu Kyi's earnest effort and sacrifices, today, Burma became freer and more peaceful land.
Not only Aung San Suu Kyi, but due to the earnest efforts, we are enjoying our freedom and more peaceful world.
It need efforts and sacrifices to make a world better place.
That sacrifices could be small or big as giving up something important in one's life.
However, the important thing is, we are all enjoying our life based on the sacrifices and of the people before us.
Then, what can we do to return to their sacrifices and exertion?

The answer could be simple, as they worked hard to make a world better place, let us bequeath the peaceful world to our children, and to next generations to generations.
The way to make the better world, could be diverse, and one of the way I can tell you is 'to take an action'.
You may join volunteer works, as I do volunteer work in MANNAM international, or you could take an action of joining peace walk to express your earnest hard toward peace.
Let's bequeath more beautiful world to our children and grandchildren.

[MANNAM] Why Two Hands?

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed;
Never throw out anyone.
Remember, if you ever need a helping hand,
You will find one at the end of each of your arms.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands;
One for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.
                                               — Audrey Hepburn [1]

It is said that we have two ears for hearing more and one mouth for speak less. Then why do we have two hands? If you read the quote of Audrey Hepburn, you can get the answer.

Why do we have two hands? According to Hepburn, we have one hand for helping ourselves, and the other for helping others. It is a coincidence that we MANNAM International Volunteer Association also think alike. We MANNAM International work on ourselves first, and then the world. To help others, some members of MANNAM International made cookies for children in the kids’ center, some massaged the back of elders in the nursing house, some bathed the puppies and kittens in the animal shelter, and some picked up garbage around Gyeongpo Reservoir, and others prepared a meal for homeless people.

What we are doing now is not really special; we are simply doing what our humanity demands of us. If you want to help others with “the other hand”, let’s work together. With more “the other hands”, we can do what is really special.
