Tell us your opinion: MANNAM 더 Peace Talk Concert

MANNAM Peace Talk Concert

TALK, SHARE, EXPRESS

Tell us your thought and let's share it together.

MANNAM Busan branch helds a speical concert every month.
There's no instrument playing or singing invovled in this concert.
Why there's no instrumet or singing in the concert?
That's because this is 'MANNAM Peace 더 Talk Concert'!

What is 'MANNAM Peace 더 Talk Concert'?
I'm sure you know all the words listed above, except a Korean word '더'
'더' means 'more' in English, and at the same time, it represents an English word 'the' which is spelled in Korean.

Basically, it can be interpeted in two ways.
First one is, 'MANNAM Peace the Peace Talk Concert.'
And secondly, it can be 'MANNAM More Peace Talk Concert''
The name of this peace talk was made from our MANNAM members' hope of making a more peaceful world by sharing thoughts.

Sharing thoughts help people to understand each other.
Once you understand them, you can embrace their behavior and bind together, since you know the reason why they act like that or think in that way.

The 1st Peace had started on January 26th, 2013 with the topic of 'My War, and My Peace'
The 2nd Peace Talk was about 'Equality, and Discrmination', which was presented by one of a MANNAM member who came from Brazil.
On March 23, the 3rd Peace talk took place at the same place with the topic of 'Culture of Violence.'
On April, when the weather got much warmer, MANNAM friends talked about 'Terroism.'

In the middle of summer, we MANNAM friends shared out thoughts on 'Poverty' The presenter of this topic was from Bangladesh.
The 5th MANNAM  더 Peace talk was discussed about 'Gender discrimination'
These are the topics of MANNAM 더  Peace Talk that we had discussed toegether.
This Peaec Talk held once every months and still going on.
If you are interested in one o the topic, or if you have any other new topics you want to share with other people who came from diversed backgrounds and experience, then why don't you share your .
We want to hear more thoughts from more people.

Through sharing thourhgs, we could think deeper and think aobut the part that we didn't really recognized before. Most of all, we can understand and learn more about each other.
You are always welcome to join MANNAM Peace Talk.
Tell us your thought and let's share it together.

MANNAM 'PEACE IS POSSIBLE': Volunteering at Elderly House!

MANNAM 'PEACE IS POSSIBLE': Volunteering at Elderly House!

On special holiday like Thanksgiving, you may come up with your family.
Here are MANNAM International Volunteers visiting at Elderly House on special holiday.

Can you see that beautiful traditional Korean costume with volunteers? They wore it for greeting to the elderly. It's great to see all volunteers have good manners.

MANNAM volunteers served the elderly and played 'Yut' traditional Korean game. For meal, They made dimple soup. In Korea culture, we usually have a dimple soup for celebrating new year with family.

I can see many elderly seem happy when they have a talk and hold a hand with volunteers. so I just realised only visiting elderly home is not a volunteering. Around us, there are many elderly people in bus, subway, park, etc or it could be a neighbor. Have a talk with them with little courage.

That kinds of mind could bring the peace in this world! You know, Everything is hard at the beginning.

[MANNAM Heal the world] Peace, Love and Understanding

[MANNAM Heal the world] Peace, Love and Understanding

Elvis Costello Peace, Love and Understanding

As I walk through

This wicked world

Searching for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself

Is all hope lost?

Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,

There's one thing I want to know:

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on

Through troubled times

My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes

So where are the strong

And who are the trusted?

And where is the harmony?

Sweet harmony.

'cause each time I feel it slipping away, just makes me want to cry.

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?

And who are the trusted?

And where is the harmony?

Sweet harmony.

'cause each time I feel it slipping away, just makes me want to cry.

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh

What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

There is much music about peace. The topic may sound difficult and heavy for others, but some of the artists make this kind of music as and exciting song. Elvis Costello is one of these artists. He made a song Peace, Love and Understanding. You can guess that this song is about peace and loving others. It was a surprise to see and hear this music for the first time, because the music was so exciting and interesting. As you can see in the video clip, the audience is so into this song. Speaking peace in a cheerful way is a way to make the people understand. And also the form Music can make people more understand about peace. Now, if you look at the lyrics, there is a man. He looks around him, and sees that the world is a mess. No more love, nor peace and understanding. So he is saying that the world needs a change and needs the three important sources back. In the song he says this world needs love, peace and understanding.

So lets change the world. Something is happening around the world. Do you know what is it? MANNAM Volunteer Association is making world peace into action. How? By loving, caring, understanding people from the need to the people around us. By this way world peace can come. This is the way we are changing the world. Many people think about peace and love. What can we do about this? We can make a difference with volunteering. This can be the key to peace. MANNAM is changing the world now. Many people want to change the world but dont know the way how. In MANNAM we can make this for real! One by one J

MANNAM ‘PEACE IS POSSIBLE’: interview of international volunteers

MANNAM ‘PEACE IS POSSIBLE': interview of international volunteers

There are beautiful international volunteers in MANNAM Volunteer Association.
They volunteered at Kids Center and Senior Center. There's no boundary in love and volunteer. Let's figure out why foreign volunteers want to do volunteer.

Q. Why did you come to Kids Center to do volunteering?
A. We've come to volunteer with these children. Because they don't have parents and we have a lot of free time. So, I miss my little nieces. So, this reminds me my little nieces.

-A Volunteer from England

Q. Isn't language barrier make you difficult to communicate with children?
A. Definitely language barrier has challenges but that's one thing that I really like about volunteering. Even those sometimes hard to communicate, you can still understand people's heart when you volunteering. So we work together to share love and heart and you can understand it without words

-A Volunteer from USA

Q. Why did you come to Senior Center to do volunteering?
A. I came here to be a little help for seniors. I want to give them present for Lunar New Year's Day in this way. I wish every seniors in this center get healthy and happy.
-A Volunteer from kyrgyzstan

Q. How was your volunteer day?
A. I was very pleased and very happy. It was glad to see kid' happy smile. I want to visit again.
-A Volunteer from Saudi Arabia

Obviously, at the first moment with kids is could be a little awkward. But, as soon as volunteers get started to open their heart, kids do.

As senior said in video, when foreigners volunteer in Korea, it becomes more inspiring to every people. Seniors feel very appreciate that their helps.

But, it's not easy to find the place foreigners can do volunteer. Since MANNAM Volunteer Association have volunteered with foreigners, the number of members is increasing.

MANNAM has a goal 'the World that Stands as One' by exchaning of culture with volunteering.

'One Love’ Bob Marley lyrics

One love, one heart
하나의 사랑, 하나의 마음
Let's get together and feel all right
모두 하나가 되어 행복해 지자
Hear the children crying (One love)
울부짖는 아이들에 귀 기울여봐 (하나의 사랑)
Hear the children crying (One heart)
울부짖는 아이들에게 귀 기울여봐 (하나의 마음)
Sayin', "Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right."
하나님께 감사하고 찬양하자 그리고 행복해지는거야
Sayin', "Let's get together and feel all right."
모두 하나가 되어 행복해지자
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (One love)
우리의 추악한 죄는 모두 잊어버리고 (하나의 사랑)
There is one question I'd really love to ask (One heart)
내가 정말 묻고 싶은 질문이 있는데 (하나의 마음)
Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
희망 없는 죄인들에게도 갈 곳이 있을까?
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?
누가 자신을 구하기 위해 모든 인간들을 아프게 했을까?
Believe me
나를 믿어

One love, one heart

하나의 사랑, 하나의 마음
Let's get together and feel all right
모두 하나가 되어 행복해 지자

As it was in the beginning (One love)
시작이 그랬던 것처럼 (하나의 사랑)
So shall it be in the end (One heart)
끝도 그럴것이라 ( 하나의 마음)
Alright, "Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right."
신께 감사하고 찬양하자 그럼 난 행복해 질거야
"Let's get together and feel all right."
모두 하나되어 기분을 내보자

Let's get together to fight this Holy Armageddon (One love)
So when the Man comes there will be no, no doom (One song)
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
There ain't no hiding place from the Father of Creation

Sayin', "One love, one heart
Let's get together and feel all right."
I'm pleading to mankind (One love)
Oh, Lord (One heart) Whoa.

"Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right."
Let's get together and feel all right.

"Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel all right."
Let's get together and feel all right

I remember that one of famous peace concert was 'One Love peace concert' held in 1978 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Why?

Bob Marley joined the hands of political rivals Michael Manley and Edward Seaga in the middle of singing when political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties Jamaican Labour Party and the People's National Party.

Just shaking their hands became the symbol of peace in the peace concert! There's many ways to bring about peace. Today, How about try to shake hands with people you don't like much?

[MANNAM PEACE IS POSSIBLE] Chairman Man Hee Lee quotes

Chairman of MANNAM, Man Hee Lee peace quotes

Why, why, and why did young man around world have to die? For whom did they have to die? The sacrifice of their lives is greater than the universe. The wish of the deceased souls was surely the world peace and the restoration of light. Their wish must have been to live in the world without war and without death. Everyone living in this globe is the same family that surpasses national borders, races , or religions. Why do we have to fight against one another? Why do people have to kill others' lives that are granted by the light, rain, and the air from heaven?                                 - Man Hee Lee -

Almost victims of war have been youths. This quotes helps me to think about Who the real is victim in the war. To stop losing youth' lives, what can we do from now?

[MANNAM International] how many languages are in this Earth?

[MANNAM International] how many languages are in this Earth?

Have you ever learn any language other than your first tongue? Perhaps you can speak multi-languages naturally. But for me and so as the many other people around the world, we need to study hard to speak another language. Sometimes learning a new language seems like a never ending process of acquiring new vocabularies (although it is very fun to speak new language once you reach certain level.). Then, have you ever wondered how many languages are in this world?

Right now, there are 7,170,412,884 (according ‘worldometers’ on Aug 7th, 2013) people living together on this single planet, the Earth. And we speak 6,800 different languages according to Linguistic Society of America. 6,800 languages! I was quite shock there are so many unknown languages that I’ve never heard of before.

Isn’t it interesting? The world is so diverse; there are more than 6,800 languages and more than 100 countries living on this single planet. Each country has its own language, races, national and customs.
Once we understand there are such many people and different languages in the world, it is not a surprising thing to see why we are so different compare to each other.
That is why MANNAM is doing cultural clubs to know each other better and make people unit regardless nation, religions, and races.
If we understand each other without any stereotypes, there would be no conflicts

In MANNAM International, we become one under spirit of volunteerism and peace regardless the race, religion, political opinion and nationalities.
Becoming one does not mean we ignore your culture and backgrounds. We MANNAM respect each other’s cultural and differences. MANNAM want to understand each other to establish a peaceful world that everyone is respected by their own natural characteristics.

Through that process, as a pure volunteer organization MANNAM will keep doing what we are best at, helping people in need and achieving peace through understanding each other’s culture.
We can achieve peace through understand and help each other.

[MANNAM] What can we do to give back the smiles on children's face?

[MANNAM] What can we do to give back the smiles on children's face?

So far, the conflict in Syria have taken more than 5000 lives of children. This number only counted the number of children who are under

The recent news delivered the testimony of two young girls who are living in the fear of violence and in a danger of getting killed. A girl who lives in Damascus, Syria said "It's scary. We hear a lot of bad stories about what is happening around us. On the streets there are soldiers everywhere. We see smoke from fighting and hear bombings all the time."

According the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, approximately 100,000 people have been killed in this civil war. In this tragic number, 5000 of them are children under the age of 16. They were only elementary and middle school and some of them were even younger. Instead of running around the playground at afternoon, those children in Syria are frighten at the fear of bomb. "My classmates and I were all very scared. Kids around me were crying and shouting at the teachers because they were so afraid. Some called their fathers crying to them that they wanted to go home" said another girl who also lives in Damascus.

Not only threat but some people in Syria suffer due to starvation. Some have no place to go because their houses were burnt. Through the news and media, we hear how people in Syria are suffering.
I believe you, who is reading this post would not want them to be suffered. Then as a man who doesn't want them to be suffered, then what can we do for them?
Shall we go out there to support their military force?
No, if we take military action, we might can't proudly speak for world peace.
For people who suffer in violence in this middle conflicts, let us spread the peace.
World peace is not a vague idea, it is us who underestimate the power of peace. The idea of peace is one of the strongest way to help people in many different nations.
Many peace makers aimed to achieve peace with non-violence act, people like Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Why do you think they devoted their lives for peace? I believe it is because spreading peace will make people to truly achieve world peace, not because of the law or by the force. It can achieve the voluntarily peace that comes deeply from each one of our hearts.
We MANNAM International supports peace, we strongly believe we can achieve peaceful world through 'peace' if you believe the same thing.
We might can't fly to Syria to save those children and people, but at this very moment, you can spread the idea of peace to others; to your friends, to your beloved ones and your neighbors and co-workers.

If you want to contribute more about spreading idea of peace, please contact us so we could cooperate together for better, and peaceful world for everyone.

[MANNAM Peace maker] Rigoberta Menchu Tum, peace maker.

[MANNAM Peace maker] Rigoberta Menchu Tum, peace maker.

Rigoberta Menchu Tum is the first natives who received Nobel peace prize and also one of the few female recipients. She was born in the poor farming family in Northern part of Guatemala as sixth children amongst her nine siblings. Her hometown was the village of Maya Indian and family lived in small farm located in the mountain. Due to that beautiful but rough mountainous range, cultivating food wasn't easy there. So she had to work in farm with her family.

Menchu Tum didn't get a chance to receive a public education due to economic situation of her family. As she grows, she worked as a maid in the capital city, Guatemala City.
Guatemala had suffered for civic war more than 30 years due to its political instability. In this rough situation of Guatemala, many Maya indians had suffered from violence of army. Hundreds and hundreds of indians village was destroyed. More than 10 million native indians became refugees. The army also destroyed and burned the village where Rigoberta Menchu lives.

As an influence of her father who was killed while working on the human right of natives, she joined civic community to work for human rights in Guatemala.
Her adversity didn't end here. Menchu Tum's mother was executed while she was organizing the famers to stand.
Her younger brother was kidnapped and was being tortured, finally was killed.
She escaped to Mexico in 1981 and surprisingly she did not stop devoting her life for spreading the awareness of violence, human right and non-violence moment.

On 1992, due to her devote on human right of natives and non-violence movement, she received the Novel Peace Prize.
Due to her earnest effort, the peace agreement was made which ceased the 36 years of civil war in Guatemala and gave rights for Maya indians.

Rigoberta Menchu Tum had been suffered from violence in her life; she lost her own parents and young brother for that too. Then, would she pay back that violence back?
No, she didn't.
I think she knew that the most beautiful peace is the peace achieves through peace.
Not violence nor through force, but by peace, MANNAM also desire to achieve the world peace through peace.

Through peace campaigns and learning each other’s difference and accepting that, MANNAM is stepping forward for peaceful world that everyone desires.
MANNAM Volunteer Association desires the peaceful world without violence.
We are hoping for the world without violence and war, the place that respects and understands each other through heart. In order to achieve that, MANNAM Volunteer Association is making a way to cease the war and to bring peace on this earth.
Even today, MANNAM members are achieving the world with through peace so as Rigoberta Menchu Tum, and many other peace makers do.

We have learned that change cannot come through war.
War is not a feasible tool to use in fighting against the oppression we face.
War has caused more problems. We cannot embrace that path. -Rigoberta Menchu Tum

[MANNAM Peace maker] "What is peace?" Question to Martin Luther

[MANNAM Peace maker] "What is peace?" Questioning to Martin Luther

As most of us know, Martin Luther King was the peace activist who worked for us to enjoy the world without discrimination. He 'dreamed' for better world and spread this message throughout American and to other places. Although he was killed in 1968 at age of 39, but his strong will for peaceful and equal world still remain in us. As Martin Luther said, world peace is not a distance goal that we are fruitlessly seeking, but it is the goal that we will arrive, sooner or later.

That is why we MANNAM Volunteer Association work together for harmonious and peaceful world.
You can make a difference by starting something small thing; such as sharing your culture with others, joining our peace activities and voluntarily works.
Although these little stepping stones, we can arrive the goal that everybody had been longed, peace.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek,
but a means by which we arrive at that goal.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

MANNAM: international Student interview

MANNAM: international Student interview

When we had an MANNAM international party, there was a good voice and fluent speaking in English MC. I asked my friend, “Who is he?” ” Alex is a young prospective man from China”, she said.

Nowadays, the number of international students has been increasing in Korea universities. I am wondering how the other countries students handle with peace. In China, with the increase in economic, how peace matter is important among young generation?

Q: Alex! You seems smart. I’m curious what you want to be in the future.

A: Oh, that’s not true. I want to be a professor of civil engineering in Korea or Singapore.

Q: As a student, what have you done for peace?

A: Personally? I’ve given up my selfish idea and shamefully, I’ve not done that much for peace, I think. In this year, participating in Peace Walk with MANNAM international was my first try for peace. At that time, it was so hot and hard to stand under the sun. After that day, I was surprised to the reports of Peace Walk on the news. So I got started to have more interests on it now.

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->

Q: Do you think PEACE IS POSSIBLE?

A: yes, Peace is possible, but it takes long time.

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->

Q: What do you think what should we do for World peace?

A: For first step, we need to extend education about peace since we’re young. If we were educated since we are young, we could be messengers of peace. Plus, we should have more volunteering work in other countries which have no opportunity of education.

Now, he is planning to move to the other city in Korea. But, he promised he will go on volunteer work with MANNAM!! Wherever you go, we are connected through MANNAM.
